How to decide on the right accessories to match your outfit

CHOOSING ACCESSORIES

After finding the perfect dress, the next step to making your wedding outfit complete is deciding on the right accessories. But where to begin? Well with this style guide, Emily is here to help you do just that!

Deciding on your look

First things first: in order to know how to accessorise your outfit, it is important to find out what type of look you are going for. For example, are you going for a simple and classy style, or perhaps a glamourous princess look? This will help define how to accent what you're wearing. Sometimes the dress will do this for you - i.e. a ballroom-type gown with particular embellishment - but with other more plain dresses, you may have more room for creating your very own style. If you have decided on a theme for your wedding, then this will also help with accesorising.

Looking for detail

For those dresses that have a particular embroidery design or embellishment, examine the detail and patterns and materials used. For example, your dress may have a diamond-shaped pattern of small crystals or it may have a silver flower pattern embroidered on. Also study the neckline, cut, and shape of your dress as these things will also help give you some inspiration. And then proceed to take your cues from all of these things!

Tiara/hair accessories

Once you've narrowed down the type of look you are going for and have examined any design detail on your dress, it's time to think about how you will accessorise your hair. Traditionally, tiaras have been associated with royal/princess-style gowns, but with so many modern and creative design available now, tiaras can suit any style of dress. If your dress is lavished with designs and embellishment, try to use that to find a suitable tiara - but if it isn't really, take some cues from the shape and cut of your dress, or what kind of style it is you want to create.

If however you do not want a tiara, then headbands, hairpins, and combs can make a lovely alternative. A classic ivory gown could be accented wonderfully with several pearl hairpins dotted around the hair, for example.

Jewellery

When it comes to jewellery, you need to decide what pieces you want to wear. Typically, if you are going for lavish or chunky jewellery, it will usually look better if you have either earrings and a bracelet or a necklace and a bracelet, otherwise you may risk overdoing it. But smaller or simpler earrings, necklace and bracelet can easily be worn together.

Again, take cues from the design and style of your dress and your theme - or use your jewellery to create your look. Big, dangly earrings with a lavish, vintage-style bracelet would look stunning with a huge, glamourous gown, but they could also be teamed with a more plain, slinky dress in order to make your outift glamourous. It's all down to you and what style you want to accent or create!
